New moons are not visible from Earth – the moon is between the Earth and the sun, so its sunlit side is facing away from us and its very close to the sun.
New moon occurs about 2 weeks after full moon.
The full moon in January 2009 is on 1/11, new moon is on 1/26.
The first New Moon in January 2009 occurs on January 26 07:55 UT. The Moon will be visible over a large part of the Indian Ocean through the Philippines as an annular eclipse of the Sun.

Hi. A new Moon is clearly visible from Earth during a Solar eclipse. A photo I took proves this. http://s184.photobucket.com/albums/x200/Pentaquark/?action=view¤t=Eclipse_Annular.jpg (Photo was published in ASTRONOMY magazine as a full page spread. Made me smile REALLY hard!) First new Moon in 2009 will occur on 2009/01/26 07:56
